Such an unexpected call on Tuesday asking was I available to judge on the following weekend in Malta due to Tom Mather being unable to fulfill his appointment. My reply, Yes, Yes, Yes!

This was my third time judging on this beautiful Mediterranean Island. My thanks to the Officers and Committee for this invitation and they all send their best wishes to Tom Mather and hope that he makes a good recovery and look forward to him judging for them next year.

Brno CACIB Shows

Written by Administrator

Vince Hogan gives an insight into this big show in Eastern Europe and how it might cope with the European Dog Show in October 2014.

The Duo CACIB Brno shows are beginning to build themselves a reputation as ‘must do’ shows in this part of Eastern Europe. This was the sixth time this weekend of two international CACIB shows has been held and over the two days attracted an entry of 8033 dogs, which is quite an achievement.

There were 25 Judges on duty for the show, including Tamas Jakkel from Hungary, Linda Volarikova, Viera Staviarska and Vladimir Piskay, all from Slovakia.

Dutch Dog of the Year

The "Dog of the Year Show" aka  "Hond van het Jaar Show" is held at the beginning of every year, a very special show organised in order to put the best dogs of the Netherlands in the spotlight.

At the beginning of every year a very special show is organised in order to put the best dogs of the Netherlands in the spotlight.

The "Hond van het Jaar Show" is not an open show,  you have to qualify before you are invited to enter.  In addition, the first owner of the dog must be resident in the Netherlands and the dog must be registered at the Dutch Kennel Club (NHSB).

Eindhoven Dog Show 2014

Written by Administrator

The show is held in the centre of Eindhoven and the hall consists of two floors. The railway and bus station are right next door, and there is lots of parking nearby, so it's a good show for everyone and easy to get to.

The second floor is obviously a challenge for the organisation, after all, people not only have their dogs with them, but also show trollies, grooming tables, chairs and all sorts of other dog stuff.  However, no problems to report.

At the recent huge winter shows in Helsinki, Our Dogs asked Kari Järvinen to look back at the Nordic Show held in Helsinki in December and forward to the World Show in August

Svetlana Valoueva asked the questions:

First of all I would like to thank you for such a great start to this December weekend and for giving me the opportunity to get first hand information about the upcoming World event that will be held in Helsinki in August of 2014.Can you review the Winner shows and explain how they came about?

The thrilla in Manila

Written by Administrator
Vince Hogan feels the heat in the Far East!

Yes I know, George Foreman and Mohammed Ali got there before me with that headline a few years ago, but it just seemed appropriate.

What this ‘Thrilla’ fact turned out to be was a whole circuit of dog shows staged on the fifth floor of a swish Manila shopping mall, held over four days and organised by the Philippines Canine Club. Four of the shows were their own, 73rd show right through to the 76th on Sunday. The other shows gave people in the Far East the chance to win at the shows of the Kennel Clubs from …wait for it…. Montenegro, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Cyprus, El Salvador and Costa Rica! Yes the world of dogs is truly international nowadays.

The climax of the 138th Westminster Dog Show saw seven superb dogs enter the arena in Madison Square Garden to be judged by Ms Betty Regina Leininger, supremely elegant in an emperor purple evening gown, before an extremely animated audience.

They consisted of an Irish Water Spaniel, Portuguese Water Dog, Bloodhound, Standard Poodle, Wire Fox Terrier, Cardigan Welsh Corgi & Miniature Pinscher. As is now customary Reserve Best In Show was announced first and, to much approval from the spectators, the Standard Poodle, GCH Brighton Lakeridge Encore was called out to the Reserve BIS spot. After an almost theatrical pause during which the noise could literally have taken the roof off, the BIS judge, Betty Leininger announced her chosen Best In Show as the Wire Fox Terrier, GCH Afterall Painting The Sky, co-owned by Victor Malzoni Jr, Torie Steele, Scott & Mary Olund and Diane Ryan, handled as always by Gabriel Rangel.

It was a great honour to be invited to judge at the 34th Brabants Rashonden Festival, organised by the Waalwijk Club. This show had a wonderful atmosphere, a hard working and innovative committee and a number of generous sponsors, including Paul & Mariel from Jean Peau, who are regular standholders at Crufts.

This Club has over 900 members and organise a lot of events over the year for their members including ring training, and before Group judging commenced each day, they made presentations to members who had crowned Champions and Junior Champions in the previous year.

Amsterdam Winners 2013

Written by Administrator

The 124th Amsterdam All Winners dog show was itself a winner in deepest December at the Rai Centre in Holland, with all the Christmas trimmings!

For anyone who does not know the European scene or Holland specifically, this is their Crufts dog show, their Westminster…the biggest they hold in the Netherlands. Normally held over two days in late November, the organisers decided to move from their traditional date to accommodate an extra days showing and in order to facilitate a transition to a better hall. The extra day became the National Show on Friday offering CACIB’s or FCI versions of Challenge Certificates in the UK. The move to the better hall was from the older Europa Hall into the more modern side of the Rai. (Pronounced ‘Rye’…) This typical Expo or event centre is on the outskirts of the historical city of Amsterdam, obviously known for its infamous ‘Red Light’ district and liberal attitude to smoking a certain type of plant, but equally one of the great European capitals with superb sights and culture if you ever want to mix dog showing and an interesting weekend away.

Komárom International Shows

Written by Administrator

THE Komárom Fortress has now become the traditional place for the closing events of the Hungarian dog show season. Two International Shows were held on the 19th & 20th of October and a few special shows also held on Saturday afternoon.

The fortress has a huge yard in the middle, big enough for the three huge show tents, the main ring, trade and food stands and for all the parking. If anybody arrived early, they could get parking just 10 metres from the ring!

Real Sociedad Canina De Espana

Written by Administrator

It was a pleasure for me to be invited back to Spain to judge for the fourth time! This time for the Real Sociedad Canina De Espana, the show held a about a two hour drive from Madrid. I judged five breeds, a total of 88 dogs, then at 4.30pm, I judged a Bobtail Specality for The OES Club of Spain, so a full day.

50th Anniversary of the Eurodogshow

Written by Administrator

As every show,  it all started small. In 1964 Mr José Misselyn organised the first edition in Menen, a small town near Kortrijk. In 1970 I entered my Great Dane for this show and I remember that it took place in the first Expo Halls of Kortrijk. Twenty-five years ago I started to work as a reporter for the national magazine in Belgium, WOEF, the Eurodogshow was my first show, and since then I have been a yearly visitor and have seen it grow larger, bigger and more professional.

Porvoo’s 60th Anniversary Show

Written by Administrator

It was a great pleasure judging the Porvoo 60th Anniversary Show and I would like to thank Kirsi Lankola and her team for putting on an excellently run show.

The showground was laid out very well although a little spread out. The standard of the dogs were of a high quality and my group winner went to the Cairn.

BIS went to the gorgeous Lhasa Apso Chic Choix Cleopatra Eurydice (pictured above) owned by Piia Helistölä-Laurila.
