Written by Administrator

The DuoCacib Brno, organised by the Czech Moravian Kennel Club, took place on the first weekend in February. The Best in Show on Saturday, judged by Vaclavik Miroslav, went to the Schnauzer (Pepper-Salt), Ave Concord Magnifique and Sundays BIS, judged by Ridarcikova Gabriele (SK), went to the Landseer, Arun Z Laderova both from the Czech Republic.

With a few more than 8,000 dogs over the two days the entry was quite comparable with the year before.

Historic win in Milan

Written by Administrator

ONE of the most important Italian shows of the year was held in Milan on the 12 & 13 January. Held over two days, there were 2,300 entries and with the club shows as well, nearly 4,000 dogs were here. This was also the Crufts qualification Show of Italy. There weren’t too many foreign dogs on show, but one of them, a Karelian Bear Dog was the Best in Show winner.

Milan is the second largest city in Italy and this show was held in quite a new exhibition centre, the Fiera Milano-Rho, outside the Milan city centre, in Rho, but there good transport links to the city, a great motorway, and its at the end of the red metro line from Milan. From the middle of Milan, you can be at the showground in 30 minutes by metro. On Sunday, especially, there were lots of members of the public who attended. The shows were in two great halls. These show halls will also hold the World Dog Show in two years time.

Joey... Top Banana at The Garden

Written by Administrator

Michael Dougherty had the honour of judging Best In Show at the 137th Westminster Kennel Club Show. This year saw the introduction of a Reserve Best In Show award and in-keeping with the American tradition of showmanship, this was announced in advance of the ‘big one’.

To a hushed Madison Garden Arena and to millions of Americans watching on live television, not including all those who were monitoring the event on social media and the internet, Reserve Best In Show was the Old English Sheepdog, Bugaboo’s Picture Perfect, owned by Colton & Heather Johnson. ‘Swagger’ was clearly popular with the audience who responded with a roar of approval. Best In Show was the Affenpinscher, GCH Banana Joe V Tani Kazari, handled by Ernesto Lara and co-owned by Zoila ( Tina ) Truesdale and Mieke Cooymans. The roof almost came off with the cheering and applause for ‘Joey’, a favourite of both the audience and yours truly, as everyone rose from their seats to show their approval.

Sabaneev Memorial Show, Moscow 2013

The Russians are coming!

OUR DOGS’ Vince Hogan looks at the rise and influence of the Russian dog scene following his recent trip to Moscow in the snow!

Perestroika and Glasnost changed Europe and the World forever in the late eighties and early nineties. The demise of the old Soviet Union created a new set of rules and changed countries around Europe. Now, coming out of the old Soviet block, undoubtedly the new force in European dog showing terms and perhaps even on the world stage, is the rise and rise of the Russian dog showing fraternity; this is a phenomenon that has caught the eye of many observers in the world of dogs.

Sabaneev Memorial Dog Show - Report

Andrey Klishas, President of the Russian Hunting Dog Federation:

At Sabaneev Memorial 2013, we received a very well balanced and comfortable entry of over 1600 dogs for the all breed show and over 1000 for the specialty shows, and our terrific judges’ panel included 30 world-known names representing 18 countries, such as Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Russia, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, USA. Of course it would be impossible to give a breed specialist to each dog at the all breed event, but as always, we did our best not only to invite the first ranked judges, but to make the proper schedule, so that the whole process could be of maximal interest for the both sides – for the exhibitors and for the judges as well.

The weekend of the 12-13 January saw more evidence of the growing numbers and success of British exhibitors abroad, when a small group of British exhibitors travelled to Slovenia to take part in three FCI championship shows including the two CACIB international shows in Ljubljana. As featured in the Our Dogs Annual 2013 (p.309).

British exhibitors have come to relish the different challenges and fun accompanying showing in Europe, and that weekend saw a whole lot of fresh challenges as they braved the winter snowy weather across Europe!

Mouscron celebrates its 40th show

Written by Administrator

It is interesting to find out what makes a success of something and what doesn’t. Belgium has several shows, most of them in Flanders. Kortrijk is probably the most famous, and Brussels is its biggest challenger. Shows in Wallonia have struggled and some disappeared, such as La Louvière and Namur. Charleroi is back but still recovering. The two remaining shows, however, are doing very well, Liège on one side, and Mouscron on the other side of the linguistic border that divides Belgium. The success of Mouscron has lasted now for 40 years, so it’s time to celebrate!

The first show of the year in Belgium was almost a nightmare for the committee. Two weeks before the show was due to take place, only a little more than 600 entries were registered. That would mean a big financial fiasco for the club, but fortunately the weekend of the closing date ended in euphoria with 1,369, two entries more than last year’s show.

Trencin CACIB Show

Written by Administrator

THE first International Show of 2013 in Slovakia was held on the 26th & 27th January in the small city of Trencin, which is 130 kilometres to the north of Bratislava in the Valley of the Vag River. Trencin has a small exhibition centre with 4 or 5 small halls.

Entry numbers were good with nearly 2,000 dogs. Groups 1, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 were judged on Saturday; and Groups 2, 3, 4 and 10 on Sunday.

Kelly & Eve do well in Holland

Westminster Kennel Club - Day One

Written by Administrator

The 137th Westminster Kennel Club took place on Monday 11th & Tuesday 12th February.

From Day 1 there was great success for winners with English connections. Winner of the Non Sporting Group was the Bichon Frise, GCH Vogelflight's Honor To Pillowtalk, owned by E M Charles & M & P Abbott & Lori Kornfeld & Mary & Kathie Vogel, sired by the famous Ch Am Ch Paray’s I Told You so, owned by Michael Coad and Geoff Corish.

At the International Dog Show in Kajaani, Finland on 12 & 13 January, 2013, Best in Show was the American Cocker Spaniel, CIB FI Ch, Fr Ch Ch Ch, Lu CH Very Vigie Eddy Mr Eddy, owned by Adeline Vancon & Sanna Vartiainen from Finland. BIS Judge was Ricky Loch-Romans from the Netherlands.

As I waited to check in at Manchester Airport I noticed a chap with a heavy case, a couple of check in desks further down. He was struggling to put the luggage on the belt, and then withdrew his wallet. Ah, he is going to bribe the girl on the desk, I thought. Looking closer I realised it was none other than Vince Hogan, with a suitcase full of annuals, for Moscow! Not one to miss a chance, as we exchanged pleasantries and parted, he threw the line ‘Patsy, do me a bit on Porto, would love to be there but can’t be in two places at once’!
