Activist group boasts of ‘success’

Featured Written by Our Dogs - 22/05/20

Animal rights group ‘Animal and Law (Dier en Recht) in Holland posted the following statement on its web site on May 13, 2020

Success: no more pedigrees for Pugs and French Bulldogs: “Thanks to your support, we have had another great success in the fight against breeding sick dog breeds! From May 18, 2020, pedigrees will no longer be provided to purebred short-beaked dogs that do not comply with the law. This mainly concerns purebred dogs with a short muzzle such as the Pug, the English and the French Bulldog. Dogs without a pedigree are not allowed to participate in dog shows. That makes it very unattractive for breeders to still breed with these dogs.

Pedigree certificates instead of family trees:  All family trees are published in the Netherlands by the Board of Directors. This umbrella organization will replace the pedigrees for purebred dogs with a short snout with pedigree. With the registration of these pedigree certificates, it will soon be easy for the government to determine which breeders do not comply with the law. Other breeds with a too short snout that can no longer be bred purebred include the Affenpinscher, Boston Terrier, King Charles Spaniel, Pekingese and Shih Tzu.

Clear criteria: We are pleased that the Board of Directors has finally complied with the law. That law states that you cannot breed animals with external characteristics that can be harmful to the offspring. This law dates from 2014, but due to the lack of strict criteria, the Board of Directors was able to provide pedigrees to dogs with a snout that was too short.

These purebred dogs also regularly won prizes at dog shows. Together with you, we have worked for and contributed to establishing clear criteria. These make it easier for the NVWA to enforce the law”
