International Dog Shows - A view from Lithuania...
The best in show winning Tibetan Terrier from Germany, taking top spot in Lithuania where the Kennel Club of that country managed to hold their usual international dog show. We asked the organising team for some background to the show :
During pandemics and countries isolation time, the kennel clubs’ efforts to hold dog shows or other canine events we believe are highly welcomed. In many countries such events are cancelled altogether or postponed to “better times”. “Therefore, we have to support each other and our hobby attending the shows taking part in neighbouring countries” – this is what participants were saying during International Dog Shows held in the Lithuanian spa town resort Druskininkai on 7 – 9 August 2020.
The entries of Druskininkai International Shows amounted to 1126 on each day, which meant there was a good breed variety of breeds and serious competition in the show rings and the finals.
Since the borders of the third countries are still closed Russian and Byelorussian participants could not make it to the show, however, the active part was taken by our colleagues from Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, and obviously, local dog lovers.
Some judges from other countries had to be replaced by the Lithuanian international dog judges, which in fact gives them opportunity to gain more experience.
International Dog Shows in Lithuania usually include plenty of educational activities for kids and families which we found are welcomed by show visitors. Unfortunately, this time for safety reasons The Education Centre of the Lithuanian Kennel Club could not have their stand for educational activities or organise demonstrations in the main ring.
Best in Show winner of the first day was American Staffordshire Terrier, of the second day – Zwegschnauzer (black), and of the third day – Tibetan Terrier. The Supreme BIS Cup was awarded to American Staffordshire Terrier bred in Serbia but living in Lithuania BIESAS LONG STEP.
Participants left the show with the best hope to meet again at the International Dog Shows in Palanga at the end of September.
