The FCI European Winner dog show 2017 has just been held in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The event proved to be a great success, especially for the Hungarians! The Best in Show winning Old English Sheepdog Ch Bottom Shaker Zephyr Dream came from Hungary and at the FCI European section meeting on Monday after the show it was decided, that Hungary will host the EDS in 2021. Hungarian Rhapsody all round!

There were about 6000 dogs entered in the EDS, plus 2300 in the international one-day show on previous Thursday. In addition to that there was a national show, too, which drew 1500 entries.

The main ring was large and beautifully decorated giving a spectacular background for the top dogs plus a memorable opening ceremony of music and dancing which received a standing ovation! Prior to Best in Show there was an excellent violoinist who also got great applause as the tension built up to the final.

All dogs were introduced into the ring by co commentators Helen Skliarova and Rony Doedijns and the finals were livestreamed by the Ukranian Kennel Union (UKU) and of course OUR DOGS.

Best in show judge from the Ukraine was Zoya Oleynikova told OUR DOGS that she was very excited and delighted to be judging such a prestigious event in her own country, have judged other international shows in other countries before this. Zoya added, “All the dogs in the groups were very-very good!

It was a very strong competition and compliments and thanks to all 10 exhibitors for their presentation and sportsmanship and to my fellow judges for sending through such excellent dogs for the final which made a great spectacle in the stunning main ring.

Compliments also to the UKU for the staging of this international gathering of dogs and dog people! But I had to make a choice and the dogs from 1, 2, 5, 10 groups were in my mental short list. It was so hard to choose 1st, 2nd and 3d place; 1st and 2nd stood out for me and I hope it was an exciting final for everyone” The winning Old English Sheepdog is owned by Joszef Koroknai, bred by Istvan Szelmar and was handled by Zsolt Hanò.

This trio seems to know the secret recipe for big wins, because they are remembered for some really remarkable achievements earlier, including at Crufts some years ago. This dog is a sonof that very Crufts group winner. Both the parents of this three-year-old dog are also bred by Istvan Szelmar.

Reserve BIS was the Afghan Hound from Mexico, Ch Brilliant Night JP Dear Zeus, owned and handled by Juan Miranda Saucedo, but bred in Japan by Takiko Tsuji. He was BIS in the Thursday international show and was watched and supported by members of the Federacion Canofila Mexicana who attended the show.

Third was the black Miniature Schnauzer from Spain, Tajinastes Epico, owned by Luis Martin del Rio.

Zsolt Hanó, handler of the BIS winner said, “I just wake up in my own bed after 17 hours driving but I'm still thinking it was only a dream ! BIS at the WDS 2013 with Jimmy and four years later with his son BIS at the Eds! Unbelievable!”

International Show and Congress

Prior to the EDS and International show had been held to get things going, using the normal main ring for the finals and on Wednesday at the show hotel and excellent Judges Congress had taken place entitled ”Its all about balance”. There were well over 150 delegates from about 40 countries and Kerry Rushby of OUR DOGS attended as a press representative and will report on the congress in a forthcoming issue.

The whole show has made a great impression judging by post show comments on social media and even though the organisers had hoped for a larger entry, it does seem that their wish to make it a friendly ’holiday’ atmosphere seems to have worked.

OUR DOGS were proud to be the international media partner for the event and will bring you more words and photos in a future issue. Photo coverage was supplied by Kynoweb who ran an excellent photo studio for winners over the four days of showing.
