Thinking about Kenya, one probably rather thinks about wild animals and safari than dogs and dog shows. So did I until my first trip to Nairobi last November.

But….there we had a dog show! The dog scene in Kenya was started by the British colonial era in the early 20th century when the British brought the first purebred dogs to East Africa.

In 1919 already the East Africa Kennel Club was founded in Kenya which was in those days an affiliation of some East African countries. Today the scene is mainly reduced to Kenya only but the name of the Kennel Club remained

Most of the approximately 200 members and breeders are living in or around Nairobi, where they have a very lovely old dog place near the city centre. The infrastructure of this charming small place was reminding me a lot of a horse venue. A white fenced big ring in the middle, a little office house right next to the ring and two big covered rows with benches, all in the middle of big trees and surrounded by plants and flowers. I was very impressed by the good quality of the dogs I have seen in this sizeable German Shepherd Specialty I was visiting.

Some dogs were imported from Europe but a lot were locally bred. Quite impressive for a small club in Africa.

Normally the East Africa Kennel Club has three all breed shows and several specialty shows for German Shepherds and Labradors in a year, all of them are outdoor and held in this same place. The most popular breeds, which has the highest entry numbers in shows also are German Shepherd Dogs and Labradors.

But also Rottweilers, Boxers, Caucasian Shepherds and St. Bernards are often seen there. I was really amazed to see this last mentioned Swiss Molossian breed in an African country, because at home in Zurich I barely see one on the street.
