Best in Show at the 148th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show under judge Rosalind Kramer was the Miniature Poodle, GCHG Ch Surrey Sage owned by Cathy Gauche and handled by Kaz Hosaka. ‘Sage’ won the Non-Sporting Group under judge Fred O. Bassett.

A smart Miniature Poodle called Sage took Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show presented by Purina Pro Plan. GCHG CH Surrey Sage, handled by Kaz Hosaka and owned by Cathy Gauche, was crowned at the America’s most prestigious dog show at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center under Judge Rosalind Kramer. Sage, a three-year-old bitch from Houston, TX, beat a field of over 2,500 entered dogs among seven group finalists to win the coveted Best in Show title after two days of Best of Breed, Group, and Best in Show competition.

Following the win Hosaka, who won Best in Show in 2002 with Sage’s great-grandmother, a Miniature Poodle called “Spice”, Surrey Spice Girl, announced that he is retiring from shows after 45 Westminster Dog Shows. A German Shepherd called Mercedes, GCHG CH Kaleef’s Mercedes, won Reserve Best in Show with handler, Kent Boyles. Hosaka said, “I’ve been here for 45 years in America. I’ve been lucky. Did a lot, especially at Westminster.

This is my seventh group win for poodles. That’s more than I could ask for. This is my perfect end. I cannot ask for more than this. “She did it for me today and she did it yesterday. Poodles are not easy. Sometimes they pick the day [they feel like showing]. But she did it yesterday and today. And even in best in show, with all the echoes and a lot of people applauding, it’s not easy but she managed it. I was more nervous than maybe she was, but I’m so excited.” He added, “This is my 45th Westminster.

It took me 22 years to win the first best in show. Took me another 22 years, today, to win second best in show.” At the news conference Hosaka also confirmed that Sage would be joining him in his retirement.
