Canada - Top Dogs 2019

Featured Written by Allison Foley

The top dog race in Canada went through quite a few changes this year. Unlike other years where the front runner started out strong and stayed the course.

This year has the top dogs changing several times over the course of the year and as of this writing the race for #1 will be too close to call! Of course this is the second year in a row that reserve Best In Show counts towards top dog standings. Personally I think this has helped shape the race and brings more opportunities for dog’s to garner points. The year started out with the West Highland White Terrier “OP” coming out of the gates and being our #1 dog.

Conditioned and shown by our favourite Westie guy David Gignac (and sometimes shown by Pat Gignac as well) Bred and owned by Lindy Barrow this team is no stranger to the top dog race. OP is currently #3 All breeds. By mid spring the Newfoundland was challenging for Top Dog with the best in shows and points going back and forth between “Tupak” and “OP”. Facebook was fun to watch all spring as these two were not only fierce competitors but close friends as well. Tupak is more formally known as Ch Midnight Lady’s Fire Up Your Engine Moso. Owned by Leo Rabinovitz, Tupak is handled by Chistina Heard.

Tupak is currently #1 All breeds. Summer arrived and Tupak seemed to solidify his ranking as #1 dog of all breeds. Come the fall however, another Working dog, the Samoyed Ch Vanderbilt n Printemp’s Luck Strike “Striker” really came on. Winning many of the summer’s bigger shows he went into the fall and won all 6 best in shows at the Pine Ridge cluster. This dog cannot be discounted at this point as he is only 631 points from top dog and with one point per dog defeated he is basically one best in show away from Top Dog status. Striker is owned by Blair & Judi Elford, Mark Ralsky and Corrine Pacht-Ralsky. He was bred by Judi and Mengu Wu and beautifully handled and conditioned by Judi. Striker is currently #2 all breeds.

With 4 working dogs in the top 10 this is a hotly contested group and we cannot wait to see what the final shows of the year bring us. Rounding off the Top 10 as of November 22 2019 the rest of the top dogs in Canada are: #4 Siberian Ch Snowmist’s Desert Chill “Chilly” owned, bred and occasionally shown by Kim Ramey-Leblanc and usually shown by Colin Brownlee. Colin is a master at getting the best out of the unique breed and they are a pleasure to watch in the ring. She currently has 26 All breed BIS and 9 RBIS to her credit in 2019. With 7 BIS and 14 RBIS “Falco” is #5 of all breeds. He is the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Ch Roaneden’s Dream Catcher.

Falco is owned by Stephanie Chaloux, Simon Robin, Gilles Chaloux and his breeder Christine Jones. Robert Jones is also a co breeder. Falco is handled by Emily Burdon. #6 all breeds is the Standard Poodle Ch Vetset Count Me In “Lina” owned and bred by Elly Holowaychuk and handled by Sarah Drake. #7 all breeds is the German Shepherd Dog Ch Woodside Belle Jun “Bella”. Bella has won 18 all breed best in shows and 17 all breed reserve best in shows in Canada in 2019 and is owned by Cortni Partner, Jody & Parker Duin. Bred by Woodside German Shepherds and handled by Courtney Penner. This is Courtney’s first dog she has handled to top dog status! Congratualtions!

At #8 all breeds is the Keeshond Ch Ashbrook’s Maverick From Shainakees “Rowdy” shown by the same handler as last year’s #1 all breeds Connie Krohn. Rowdy and Connie have won 15 all breed best in shows and 8 reserve best in shows in 2019. Rowdy is owned by Lynne Hewitt and Rev. Ruthann Seibert and bred by Ruthann and Suzette Lefebvre. #9 all breeds is the Bouvier des Flandres Ch Lanvern Firefall Dble O Seven “Bond”. Bond and handler Shannon Scheer have won 8 all breed best in shows and 11 reserve best in shows this year. Bond is bred and owned by long time Bouvier breeders Fran and Yves Verner. Bond and Shannon have won many of the summer’s largest shows.

And rounding off the top 10 is the Rottweiller Ch Esmonds God of All “Pan” owned by Dawn Phillips and Ann Felske-Jackman and bred by Ann and Tammy Ausloos Pan is handled by Lori-Ann Fischer. Together Lori and Pan have won 12 all breed best in shows and 7 all breed reserve best in shows so far in 2019. Thanks for reading the Canadian review and hold on to your hats as the top dog race here, unlike the past few years isn’t over yet!
