The venue for the dog show was none other than one of Lima’s iconic attractions the Magic Circuit of the Water where music, water, sound and laser lights delight young and old with dazzling and unique spectacles.
A portion of the vast manicured lawns were set up with great shade tenting to provide a classy and very beautiful setting to showcase not only dogs from Peru but many other entries from adjoining South American countries.
The judges for the event were myself, Richard Paquette from Canada and two distinguished All Breed judges namely Eugene Yerusalimsky from Russia and Roberto Caputi from Ecuador.
At the same venue were the 1st and 2nd Specialty Shows judged by my fellow Canadian judges and famed Bull Terrier breeders Gordon and Norma Smith.
The hospitality extended towards all the judges was awesome and each evening we dined in amazing restaurants and enjoyed an adventure of Peruvian gastronomical delights. It is not often that all three judges choose the same dog for Best In Show but such was the case with a handsome and striking black Standard Poodle male scoring a ‘hat trick’.
Much to our surprise we found out at the end of the shows that the Poodle was no ordinary show dog but was none other than ‘Ricky’ the winner of Best In Show at Crufts in 2014 Ch Amberglow Maverick Sabre who came out of retirement and was shown the first time at these shows.
Another bit of trivia is that he had been cut down several years ago and appeared in the ring in his former top condition as the photos will attest. “Ricky’ is owned by Ilaria Biondi de Ciabatti from Peru and handled by Konstantinos Pavlopolous. This was my second visit to this beautiful country. On my previous visit I went to the Cusco area and visited the phenomenal Machu Picchu site.
On this occasion I did all the local attractions in Lima and a side trip to to Ica Desert south of Lima for an exciting day of dune buggies and sand boarding down the spectacular sand dunes. A well organized dog show, great venue, beautiful dogs, great hospitality and camaraderie with fellow judges...who could ask for more.
