The Circuito Internacional, Uruguay

The Circuito Internacional Uruguay (Uruguayan International Circuit) is a back to back show – one international and one local – which takes place in February each year.

Most other Uruguayan shows tend to usually attract dogs from their nearest neighbours – Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, but this one attracts a large international following from all over South and Central America for several reasons.

First and most attractive is that only at these shows, can a dog which is already a champion in any FCI NCO, be allowed to gain the title of Uruguayan Champion if they get the two CAC’s on offer at these shows, as opposed to having to win four CAC’s as per normal.

So that in itself is a huge incentive for dogs to travel to this show to try and complete their champion title in just the one day, as the circuit is only for a day but operates four rings for two shows.

Coupled with this bonus of getting the Uruguayan Champion title faster, the show is also the only one held at the idyllic seaside haven of Punta Del Este, some 100kms away from the capital of Montevideo.

The sun kissed beaches with powdery white talcum powder like sand, is other huge attraction for exhibitors to travel to this circuit, as the time of year, the end of summer and the school holidays, make it ideal for a mini vacation. Two for the price of one some would say.

Punta del Este is the Riviera or Cannes of Uruguay and is a magnet for neighbouring Argentineans and Paraguayans who spend most of their summer vacation topping up their tans in Punta del Este. The hustle and bustle coupled with the seaside backdrop makes it a truly sensational location to while away the hours in the shade of a beach umbrella as you sip on a giant sized cocktail.

The show always boasts a fully international panel; however this year had to use the substitute local judge, as one of the internationals got confused with the show dates, it would appear and missed turning up. Their loss I would say. The show venue is the new purpose built convention and exhibition centre in Punta del Este (this was the second time the show was held there) which is the ideal air conditioned venue, perfect for dogs and humans alike and give the shows a very international and comfortable feel.

Four fairly large rings which convert into one giant Best in Show ring worked well and the ringside deco of flags from the world over, coupled with trade stands and seating area for spectators made it the perfect set up. It reminded me of those American dog shows held in hotel ballrooms. The shows ran like clockwork and the stewards and organisers ensured that judges and exhibitors alike did not want for anything.

What else would one expect from the highly travelled and experienced, not to mention delightful combination of Adrian Landarte, Jorge Nallem and Paco Crisera at the helm. The show had about 300 plus dogs for each shows and as mentioned a mix of the top dogs from Uruguay and from the region all arrived to win the coveted placements at the region’s most popular summer circuit. As such judging such high quality dogs was exactly what every judge dreams of and with such kind and polite handlers, it was the icing on the cake.

It really was a very tough assignment having to stay in Punta del Este for four nights and five days and then have to judge for a WHOLE day. It made leaving this little bit of paradise all the harder!

A definite must visit show and also one that if you’re invited to judge at, you must say YES!
