Dutch Dog of the Year

Featured Written by

The "Dog of the Year Show" aka  "Hond van het Jaar Show" is held at the beginning of every year, a very special show organised in order to put the best dogs of the Netherlands in the spotlight.

At the beginning of every year a very special show is organised in order to put the best dogs of the Netherlands in the spotlight.

The "Hond van het Jaar Show" is not an open show,  you have to qualify before you are invited to enter.  In addition, the first owner of the dog must be resident in the Netherlands and the dog must be registered at the Dutch Kennel Club (NHSB).

During the year it is possible to qualify at the (inter)national shows held in the Netherlands.

How does one qualify to compete for "Dog of  the Year":

  •  Dogs that are placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in Group at a CAC or CACIB show for all breeds of a show for an amount of breeds from the same FCI-group.
  • Dogs that gained the title "Club Winner" (=BOB) at the Champion show of an official breed club registered at the Dutch Kennel Club.
  •  In the year the CAC for Dutch Breeds will be organized all BOB's of the Dutch breeds

How does on qualify to compete for "Best Veteran of the Year"

  • Dogs that are placed best veteran of the day at a CAC or CACIB show for all breeds of a show for an amount of breeds from the same FCI-group.

In addition the "Best Dog of  the Dutch Breeds of the Year" will be chosen

  • All dogs of Dutch breeds entered for the previous two competitions also qualify for this competiton.

The Partners

  • Dutch Kennel Club 'Raad van Beheer'
  • K.N.K. "Cynophilia"
  • Eukanuba

Glitz and glamour

The Dog of the Year Show distinguishes itself from other exhibitions not only by the presence of the cream of purebred dogs in the Netherlands, but also by the 'glitz and glamour'.

Gradually, the tradition has grown and nowadays the dogs are shown stage, so good to see for every visitor. The movement of the dogs is  judged on the catwalk!

Basically, the Dog of the Year Show is an introduction to what the Dutch cynology offers at a high level.

For the Dog of the Year Show 2013 - held 23 February 2014 - almost 400 dogs qualified of which 270 are entered.

Being beautiful is not enough

The policy in the Netherlands is focused on a bigger picture however. A dog not only has to be beautiful, but also in good health and without any exaggeration. The            judges have clear instructions to take everything into consideration. It is made very clear that a dog, that does not meet these criteria, can never be a champion. Not only are there judges and veterinarians present, but also the behavior of the dog handlers is monitored. The "Canine Care Team" is - as at all CAC/CACIB shows -  therefore deployed to watch the welfare of the dogs during the Dog of the Year Show, but fortunately are more like guests than as a controlling team because at this level the exhibitors know that a "happy" dog can only shine if it feels good.

The next "Dog of the Year Show" will be held on Sunday January 11th, 2015. Hope to see you all there.
