Beautiful weather, sunshine and a cool breeze allowed for a great day at this year’s NW&PBS, held under the gorgeous rolling hills of Malvern.

Parties took place around several of the breed rings, many celebrations for new champions and birthdays! Over at Royal Canin, Nancy and Clive Evans celebrated their 50th champion in Dobermanns, Ch Amazon Chanel For Alcumlow! Trade stands were in good attendance, unfortunately a few less due to the Houndshow being held the same day in Stafford! Overall there was 2214 dogs making 2503 entries!

The highest entry in the working group came from Boxers with 120 dogs and in the pastoral group, Shetland Sheepdogs had 132 dogs. The day began with the JHA semi-finals, Working judge, Stephen Gosling, chose Bow Wilson, handling a Bullmastiff as his 6-11 winner and Nicole Owles handling a Newfoundland as his 12-16 winner. Josh Henderson judged the pastoral semis and 6-11 was won by Isobel Khwaja with a Shetland Sheepdog and 12-16 was Abby Webb with a Bearded Collie. These handlers will now compete in the final at Discover Dogs in October this year!

First Lady Just before Group Judging began the Ring Commentator, Keith Young announced that this would be Secretary Ann Arch’s last NWPBS Championship Show as she was standing down later in the year. Having known Ann for many years, and having served on several KC Committees with Ann, Keith gave a brief outline of Ann’s career, calling her the First Lady of the National and saying she had been involved with NWPBS, (then NWBS), since its formation in 1967 and had been Secretary for 47 years since 1971. Keith the passed the microphone to Chairman Mick Taylor to present Ann with a retirement gift on behalf of the Committee. Having worked with Ann for the last 20 years Mick said that Ann had always been the consummate professional, totally efficient and always on hand for help and advice.

Treasurer, Marilyn Scrutton then persuaded Ann to vacate her “Secretarial Bunker” to receive her gift and a bouquet of flowers, and also an appreciative round of applause from all the exhibitors round the ring. Ann will not be leaving NWPBS completely as she has agreed to be President of the Society, so will no doubt keep an eye on things and be able to enjoy future shows without having to worry about Secretarial responsibilities. Pastoral group The pastoral group was judged by Mr M James and he chose his winner as Nagrecha, Mattisson-Sandstrom and Sandstrom’s Pyrenean Mountain Dog, Ch Viskalys My Way Or No Way To Chandlimore.

This dog has 10 CCs, 5 group wins alongside multiple other placings, a best in show and a reserve. He was sent through to the group by Michael Coad from an entry of 39. Taking second spot was the Border Collie, Fawcett’s Laceway Echo Falls, taking her 1st CC and BOB from 126 dogs under Val Tiller. Kirkwood, Carruther and Rear’s Samoyed, Ch Vandreem Imperial Cruz was group 3 sent through by Richard Kinsey from an entry of 63. Taking the final spot was Clarke’s Hungary White Puli Furge at Peluche, winning his 3rd CC under Stuart Mallard.

Working group The working group was judged by Mrs L Lewis, she sent through the St Bernard, Nagrecha and Brennan’s Chandlimore Counting Stars, to best in show. From an entry of 25, she was Kevin Young’s choice of best of breed. It was her 4th CC, she also has a group win and reserve. Group 2 was Taylor’s Ch & NL Ch Minaelea’s Black Mambo JW, sent through to the group by Joe Smith from an entry of 86. Group 3 was Dekhar’s Bullmastiff, Fr & Lux Ch Lenny Kravitz Hauts De Gaumont. Group 4 was Smith’s Russian Black Terrier, Kontaktas Phoenix at Fernwood.

Judging best in show was well known judge, exhibitor and breeder, Mr Geoff Corish. Known best for his terriers and most recently, Bichons. Geoff also won a Pawscar at this year’s ceremony for all time achievement, ‘Hall Of Fame.’ Geoff chose the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, handled by Andi Horwood, as his best in show, and St Bernard, handled by Tan Nagrecha, as reserve. Congratulations especially to Tan Nagrecha on both his dogs’ successes this weekend!
